DISTRACTIONS!
There are times when a story just has to percolate, and there’s little a writer can do about that unless there’s something to edit. To not go stark raving mad while characters chitter in the background of our mind, sometimes it’s nice to study a martial art (so you can hit something like a tire or a heavy bag), otherwise workout some of that energy, or write generally mediocre poetry and paint pictures that are sometimes not half bad.
Here is a short story, The Firebirds. I wrote this in high school. It is part of the same imagery I'm using in the book I'm compiling scenes for now. It isn't actually a distraction, but it is humming in the background.
Here's a painting I did for a character, Kuen, from Fate of the Red Queen:

Kuen's portrait has a great deal to do with the story. The tattoo on her head, as well as her choice of knife. If I had the courage to do the portrait again, I'd adjust how it looks as if she's holding the Kampilan. When I did test pictures (of myself holding a weapon) , I could not see my right arm. So, I painted it that way. Unfortunately it looks as if she's holding it one handed. Artistic license would have been good, here. But I never claimed to be a brilliant artist. Still, I love the portrait, but I love the story better. Funny Gnome South is helping me work out the kinks. A good group of fellow writers! |
